Let Kerno work out how much oil fills your mold, then resize the recipe to match. Save the mold once and reuse it on other recipes and tests.
Before you start
Open a recipe whose oils total 100%. See Build a soap recipe in the calculator.
Size from a mold
- In the recipe's Oils section, click Size from a mold.
- Under How do you know the mold's size?, choose Weight it holds, Volume or Dimensions. Weight needs no conversion.
- For dimensions, choose the Shape and Dimension unit, then enter Length, Width and Pour height. Pour height is how high you fill, not the wall height.
- To reuse the mold, check Save as a mold for this workspace and type a Mold name.
- Click Continue.
- Choose how Kerno turns the volume into a weight. Oil weight uses Kerno's estimate of 0.4 oz of oils per cubic inch. Total batter weight, from a density uses a density you enter, or click Calibrate with the batter weight that once filled this mold.
- Enter the Bar thickness. Kerno shows how many bars the batch makes. Keep Update bars per batch on this version checked so the cost per bar and the BOM use it.
- Click Review the recipe.
- Check each line before and after the change, then click Apply to recipe.
The recipe's oils, lye, water and additives change to the new size. Nothing is saved until you apply.
Good to know
- Applying changes only the size, its basis and unit, and bars per batch. Superfat, lye purity, water settings and oil shares stay the same.
- With the oil weight method, the batch weighs more than the target, because lye and water are added on top of the oils.
- An additive dosed per batch keeps its amount. Change it on its line if it should grow with the batch.
- Use Molds filled from this batch and Fill percentage for more than one mold or a partial fill.
- Saved molds are listed under Formulations on the Molds page. You can archive a mold that a recipe version was sized from, but you can't delete it.
- To change a saved mold's dimensions or conversion, size from it again and save it under a new name.
