Add the things you make and sell. A product has a name, a type, a selling price and the unit you count it in. Its cost comes later, once it has a BOM and production runs.

Create a product

  1. Go to Products and click Add product.
  2. Type the Product name.
  3. Choose the Product type: Candles, Soap and so on.
  4. Turn on This product has variants if you make it in more than one scent, size or format.
  5. Enter the Selling price and choose the Unit it's counted in, such as jar, tin or bar.
  6. Click Create product. If variants are on, the button reads Continue to variants instead and takes you to the variant setup.

The product opens on its Overview tab, with its SKU, type and unit along the top. Overview gives you what's on hand, reserved and available, plus the unit cost, selling price and margin. Cost & margin compares the last actual cost with the current estimate, and Overview also has Components & suppliers. The other tabs are Variants, BOMs, Inventory, Production Runs and Settings. Your next step is a BOM, so Kerno can work out what the product costs.

Good to know

  • Got a photo? Upload image takes a JPG, PNG, WEBP or GIF up to 5 MB. Without one, Kerno shows a graphic for the product type.
  • Leave SKU blank and Kerno builds one from the product name, like SCT-0006.
  • In Sales channels, list where you sell the product, separated by commas, such as Website, Farmers Market.
  • The Inventory settings at the bottom of the form handle lot tracking, expiration dates, the lot allocation method, a low stock threshold, and a reorder point and quantity for planning runs. If you skip them, Kerno uses sensible defaults.
  • A deactivated product doesn't disappear. It's just hidden from pickers.
  • On the Products page you'll see each product's type, variants, available stock, selling price and current cost, with filters for status and type.
