Create a BOM (from scratch or from a recipe)

Write down what goes into one batch of a product. A BOM (bill of materials) lists the materials, steps and quality checks for a batch, and production runs use it to reserve stock and work out cost.
Create a BOM from scratch
- Go to BOMs and click New BOM.
- Choose the Product.
- If the product has variants, choose the Variant. Each variant can have its own BOM.
- Enter the Batch size and Batch unit, such as 24 tins or 4 lb.
- Click Create draft & open builder.
- In Components & Materials, click Start with Ingredients + Packaging. In each line, choose the material, then enter the quantity, its unit and any Waste %.
- Click Add material for each further line, or Add several to add more at once.
The builder saves as you go and shows All changes saved at the top. The Summary on the right shows the batch, the total component weight and what's still missing. Next, add steps and checks, then publish the BOM.
Create a BOM from a recipe
You need an approved soap recipe. See Build a soap recipe in the calculator.
- Open the approved recipe and click Create BOM.
- Choose the Product and Variant it makes. If the product doesn't exist yet, click Product not listed? Create it here. It opens in a new tab; reload the recipe page afterward to see it in the list.
- Check the Output: Bars per batch, Cure loss, Trim loss and Bar weight. Kerno fills in the bar weight from the batch and the losses.
- Under Materials, choose the material you stock for each recipe line, or click New to add one.
- Click Create BOM.
The draft BOM opens with the recipe's amounts, grouped as in the recipe (for example Lye solution), and production steps written from the recipe, such as "Make the lye solution". Lines from the recipe show From formula and are locked. To change an amount, change the recipe and create a new BOM.
The BOMs page
BOMs lists every BOM with its version, product, batch size, number of components, estimated material cost per batch, estimated cost per unit and status. An asterisk on a cost means the estimate is incomplete, because a material has no cost yet or a unit can't be converted. Filter by status or product, and use Export BOMs or Export BOM lines to download them.
Good to know
- Every quantity in a BOM is for one batch of the batch size you set.
- Finished goods per batch defaults to the batch size when the batch is counted in the product's unit.
- Change, beside the product at the top of a draft, moves the draft to another product or variant. The materials, steps and checks stay as they are.
